One On One | 2010
Float, 2009, 1 : 1 scale paper model of a boat used to cross the Mediterranean from Libya to the Italian island of Lampedusa by 25 asylum seekers in May 2009, 520 x 175 x 60 cm. In the background is the film Fucking Paradise.
One On One took place at the Brno House of Arts in the Czech Republic from February 11th to March 21st, 2010. The exhibition brought together works of three artists from the Hague who had received the Premium grant from Stroom Den Haag, with three artists living or working in Brno. Curated by Radek Vána, the show consisted of three duo presentations: myself and Katerina Šedá; Marleen Sleeuwits and Jan Nálevka and Zeger Reyers and Milan Houser. Exhibition design was by Zwaart Schaap from Amsterdam
The work I presented was part of the project Float, in which a rubber boat migrants had used to cross the Mediterranean was remade as a 1:1 scale paper model, together with films and screenprints exploring the connection of present day migrants with that of the Pilgrims’ historic voyage to North America.
