Studios at MASS MoCA | 2018
These works were made during a month long residency at the Studios at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts. It was the first time I was able to experiment with foil and paper, allowing for more sculptural possibilities that can hold folds and shapes. The pattern of the crumple started to resemble tree bark, setting off associations between the paper and the material it’s made from. Though this direction I subsequently moved away from, it proved an important step in developing the drawings further as larger scale works.
It was very special to have daily access to MASS MoCA’s amazing space and artworks, and explore the area around North Adams with its incredibly natural beauty (and, yes, climbed Mount Graylock with a couple of other artists on a chilly Easter Day) and complex, sometimes dark industrial history.
With thanks to Stroom Den Haag.
