The Missing A3 | 2015

The Missing A3, 2015, series of paper cutouts of highway intersections on the A1 to A10 in the Netherlands, colored pencil on acid free paper, each 42 x 29.7 cm

Each work in the series of paper cutouts The Missing A3 shows an alternative version of one of the highways A1, A2, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A10 in the Netherlands. Every intersection occurring on each highway was traced and superimposed on top of one another. Then the whole was cut out, leaving behind a shape reminiscent of an explosion, scribble or circulation system. The composite intersection was then colored in with colored pencil and cut out. Each road intersecting one of the highways has its own color, but all are in shades of red and blue, referencing the colors of arteries and veins. The cutouts are hung with the colored side to the wall.

Each cutout is A3 size – the A3 in the Netherlands, though never built, is still present in the dimensions of the paper.
